News/Blognew SHRAG recording - Chasing Consummations# On Wed 25th Jan 2012 @ 2:29pm John said... oh, yes... Startling in their ability to catch the listener by surprise, Shrag offer a taster from their forthcoming album Canines, due out in May on WIAIWYA/Fortuna POP! The track “Chasing Consummations” appears at the more melodic, reflective end of Shrags spectrum, and demonstrates a new, more confident side to the Brighton/London 5-piece.Helen King from the band describes it: “’Chasing Consummations’ is a defiant song about allying yourself with your own ridiculousness, refusing to pathologise an outlook and approach to life which enables as much as it debilitates. Colour is not all it is cracked up to be.” Recorded at Gargleblast Studios with producer Andy Miller (Life Without Buildings, Mogwai, Sons and Daughters), “ChasingConsummations” is the first taste of Canines, Shrags third album. More ambitious and mature than their previous work, Canines is a pop record that bristles with urgency, melody and danger. As Helen says: “We wrote Canines between January and August this year in a long series of slightly fevered evenings ensconced in the shed at thebottom of Bobs garden. It is a pop record about bones and skin and cities and compulsions and love and confusion. It is a bit strange, but you can dance to some of it, and it makes a particular kind of sense to us, which feels very exciting.” Canines follows 2009s self-titled debut album, and 2010s Life!Death! Prizes!, which met critical acclaim from Uncut, Pitchfork, The Sunday Times and The Quietus. The band have performed in New York atthe CMJ Music Marathon, played a scene stealing performance at Indietracks Festival, and have recorded three sessions for BBC6s MarcRiley, including one at Londons prestigious Maida Vale Studios for Radio One. Renowned for the energy and vitality of their live shows, Shrag setout on a joint-headline UK tour in February with Tunabunny fromAthens, GA, who share their reputation for compelling live performances. To commemorate this union, the bands will be releasing alimited edition split 7” on February 20th featuring another track from Canines, "Tendons In The Night". DJ Downfall has recently completed a soundtrack for Choir by Elizabeth Price, a video work premiered at the Chisenhale Gallery in London in July. This involved everything from throwing tambourines on the floor of City churches to recording (his own) high-heeled footsteps He has also been busy on a co-curation project at the Science Museum based around the current exhibition of the Oramics Machine, an amazing, unique instrument from the 1960s. From tracking down obscure drum machines to working out how to explain synthesisers to Korean tourists, there is simply nothing he can nott do - except deliver the next album.
